Overview

The Silent World

Nyx is the fourth planet from the Eridan star — a world encased in ice kilometers thick. The surface is a featureless white expanse broken only by pressure ridges, crevasse fields and the occasional geyser plume where subsurface heat meets the frozen crust. No one lives here. No one has ever tried. The temperatures are lethal, the terrain is treacherous and there is nothing on the surface worth the risk.

Beneath the ice, it is a different story. Nyx has vast underground cave systems carved by geothermal activity — networks of caverns and tunnels that extend deep into the planet's crust. The caves are dark, unstable and extremely cold, but they contain resources found nowhere else in the Eridan System: hydrogen deposits, cryogenic elements, unknown alloys and fragments of Builder construction.

Deep scans reveal structures beneath the ice that are not geological formations. Something was built down there, long before humanity arrived. The Builder Archive may lie waiting in the deepest caverns. Getting there requires drilling through the crust, navigating unstable cave networks and operating equipment in conditions that push every system to its limits. Nyx is not a colony target. It is a destination for those willing to endure the worst conditions in the system for the chance to find answers.

SURFACE

The Ice Shelf

The surface. Kilometers of frozen nitrogen and water ice. Wind speeds reach 300 km/h during storms, stripping unanchored equipment in minutes. Pressure ridges form walls of shattered ice ten meters tall. Crevasses open without warning. Beautiful from orbit. Lethal on foot.

DESCENT

The Bore Network

Vertical shafts drilled through the ice by a previous expedition. Most bores have collapsed or refrozen. A few remain passable, stabilized by heating elements running on power cells that could not be removed. These are the routes down into the cave systems below.

SUBSURFACE

The Cave Systems

Extensive underground cavern networks carved by geothermal activity over geological timescales. Dark, cold and structurally unstable. Thermal currents create navigable passages between larger chambers. Ice formations and mineral deposits line the walls. The deeper sections show signs of deliberate construction that predates any known human activity.

DEEP

The Deep Floor

The lowest accessible level. Geothermal vents create zones of relative warmth amid the frozen rock. Builder structures rise from the cavern floor — geometric spires, platforms and archways made of a dark alloy found on every other planet in the system. But here, they are not buried or overgrown. They are clean. Intact. Possibly still active.

Previous Expeditions

At least two previous expeditions attempted to explore Nyx's subsurface. They established the bore network and recovered initial samples before losing personnel to environmental hazards. Equipment and supply caches from these expeditions remain scattered through the upper cave systems. Their records, where recoverable, provide critical navigation data.

The Drift Union has sent small reconnaissance teams to Nyx's surface on multiple occasions. They have mapped the bore entrances and conducted preliminary scans of the upper cave systems. Their data is available to those with sufficient Union standing. No Union team has reached the deep floor.

Base Camp FrostbiteSurface — Staging Area

A prefab shelter on the ice shelf near Bore 3. Heated, pressurized, cramped. The staging point for all subsurface operations. Equipment storage, supply management and emergency retreat point. The wind outside never stops. Keeping the shelter operational in Nyx conditions is itself a continuous maintenance task.

Bore 3 — The DescentVertical Access — Primary Route

A 4-kilometer vertical shaft through solid ice, kept open by heating elements embedded in the walls. The descent is by cable winch — slow, claustrophobic and punctuated by horizontal ice caves where conditions deteriorate further. The bore narrows in sections where refreezing has encroached. Equipment can get jammed. The ice groans constantly.

The Upper CavernsCave System — Resource Zone

The first accessible cave level below the bore. Large chambers connected by narrow passages. Ice formations create natural barriers and navigation challenges. Hydrogen deposits and cryogenic elements can be extracted here. Previous expedition supply caches provide supplementary resources, though most have been partially depleted or damaged by ice shifts.

The Thermal VentsDeep Zone — Hazardous

Geothermal vent clusters on the deep cavern floor where temperatures rise to near-survivable levels. The vents create zones of relative warmth that make extended operations possible. Unknown alloy deposits are concentrated around the vent fields. Builder structures emerge from the rock here, their geometry integrated with the natural formations as if grown rather than built.

The Builder ArchiveDeep Zone — Mystery

Deep scans indicate a large geometric structure at the deepest point of the cave system — too regular to be natural, too large to be anything human-built. If the signal analysis from Theta-7 is correct, this is a Builder installation that has been sealed beneath the ice since before human colonization. Reaching it requires navigating the most dangerous sections of the cave network. What it contains — data, technology, or something else entirely — is unknown.

Extreme Temperatures

The defining threat. Surface temperatures drop below -200 degrees C in shade. Cave systems range from extremely cold to merely freezing near thermal vents. Thermal batteries drain faster than expected. Equipment rated for standard cold environments fails on Nyx. Everything must be rated for extreme cryogenic conditions.

Ice Storms

Surface storms with wind speeds exceeding 300 km/h carrying ice debris that strips unprotected equipment in minutes. Storms can last hours or days. All surface operations must be planned around weather windows. Being caught outside the shelter during a storm is not survivable.

Unstable Caverns

The cave systems shift. Ice expands and contracts with thermal cycles. Passages that were open on one trip may be sealed on the next. Ceiling collapses occur without warning. Vibration from equipment operation can trigger structural failures. Every route must be assessed, and backup routes are not optional.

Equipment Failure

Nyx temperatures push every piece of equipment beyond its rated operating range. Batteries drain faster. Seals contract and leak. Lubricants freeze solid. Moving parts seize. A single component failure cascading into a system failure is the most common cause of expedition loss on Nyx.

The ice shelf is fractured by crevasses ranging from narrow cracks to gaps hundreds of meters deep. Surface snow bridges hide crevasse openings. Ground-penetrating radar is essential for surface travel. Falling into a crevasse means falling into darkness with no way to climb out.

The deep caverns below the thermal vents have never been fully explored. Instrument readings become unreliable near the Builder structures. Equipment brought too deep develops persistent calibration errors. The environment around the Builder Archive does not behave according to known physics. Ice (Water Source)

Nyx ice is among the purest water sources in the system. Extraction and transport are logistically challenging, but the demand from stations and arid colonies makes it a viable export. Ice harvesting on the surface is possible during weather windows.

Concentrated in the upper cave systems. A critical fuel component for propulsion systems and energy generation. Extraction requires cryogenic-rated equipment, but the deposits on Nyx are larger and purer than any other known source in the Eridan System.

Cryogenic Elements

Rare compounds that only form under extreme cold and pressure. Used in advanced cooling systems, experimental shielding and precision manufacturing. Harvested from ice formations in the bore shafts and upper caverns.

Unknown Alloys

Concentrated around the thermal vent zones. Material composition does not match any catalogued alloy. Properties include extreme temperature resistance and unusual electromagnetic behavior. Analysis is ongoing. The alloy's relationship to Builder construction is apparent but not yet understood.

Pieces recovered from the outer edges of the deep floor structures. Unlike fragments from other planets, Nyx specimens are pristine — unweathered, undamaged, still resonant. The most valuable research material in the Eridan System.

Establish extraction operations for hydrogen, cryogenic elements and unknown alloys. The upper cave systems offer valuable resources with manageable risk. The thermal vent zones offer the rarest materials in the system, but operating at that depth requires significant infrastructure investment.

Builder Mystery — Eridan Climax

The Builder Archive

Reach the deepest structure beneath the ice. Interface with Builder technology that has been sealed for an unknown duration. The Archive, if it can be accessed, contains the answers to every question raised by discoveries on Kessler, Voss and Theta-7. This is the culmination of the Eridan System's central mystery.
