CLASSIFIED BRIEFING

00 The Setting

Humanity discovered the Jump Gates two hundred years ago. Ancient structures of unknown origin, orbiting dead stars at the edges of barren systems. When activated, they connected distant star systems instantly, collapsing distances that would have taken centuries to cross. The galaxy opened overnight.

Colonization exploded. Corporations, governments, and independent settlers spread across dozens of systems within a few generations. The Gates were treated as gifts. Infrastructure. Tools. Entire economies were built around them, trade routes carved through space like highways through wilderness.

Nobody asked who built them. Nobody asked why. Until the Resonance started.

01 The Builders

An ancient alien civilization that vanished millions of years ago. Their technology is beyond comprehension. The Jump Gates are their most visible legacy, but far from their only one. Scattered across the galaxy, traces of their presence can be found in the strangest places: etched into asteroid cores, buried beneath planetary crusts, drifting in the void between stars.

Fragments of Builder artifacts have been recovered on remote worlds, but no intact structures have ever been found. Research suggests the Builders did not simply die out. They sealed themselves away. Deliberately. Every piece of evidence points to a coordinated, galaxy-wide withdrawal executed with terrifying precision.

The question that keeps the brightest minds awake at night is not where they went. It is what they were sealing themselves away from.

02 The Resonance

A phenomenon first detected at the edges of active Jump Gates. Not a sound. Not a signal. A vibration in reality itself, measured only by the most sensitive instruments and felt by no living being. At first.

Initial readings were dismissed as sensor noise. Calibration errors. Background radiation. Then equipment began failing near Gates. Crew members reported persistent headaches, vivid hallucinations, and a sense of being watched. Scanner readings became contradictory, returning data that should have been physically impossible.

The Resonance is growing stronger. Research teams now believe the Gates are not transportation devices. They are doors. And something on the other side wants them open.

03 The Factions
The Commonwealth
Government / Administration
Home System: Helix
Remnant of Earth's original government. Bureaucratic but stable. The Commonwealth controls trade regulation across colonized space and maintains order through diplomacy, law, and the quiet threat of economic sanction. Slow to act, but difficult to oppose once committed.
Free Miners Guild
Industry / Resources
Home System: Ironhold + Frontier Systems
Independent miners and haulers bound not by ideology but by mutual interest. Pragmatic and deal-oriented, the Guild respects wealth and hard work above all else. Their supply chains keep the frontier alive, and they never let anyone forget it.
Verdant Collective
Science / Sustainability
Home System: Verdana
A bio-focused civilization that values balance and sustainability above expansion. Experts in agriculture, genetics, and terraforming, the Collective has turned barren moons into garden worlds. Peaceful but firm in their principles, and not afraid to cut off resources to make a point.
Iron Vanguard
Military / Defense
Home System: Ironhold (Bastion HQ)
The galaxy's self-appointed shield against external threats. Paranoid, disciplined, and extremely well-armed. The Vanguard believes the Resonance is a weapon, and they intend to be ready when it fires. Their fleets patrol the frontier, and their loyalty is to survival itself.
The Wanderers
Trade / Nomadic
Home System: None -- Found Everywhere
A fleet with no homeworld. Traders, scavengers, and information brokers who go where the credits flow. The Wanderers know things nobody else does, and they sell that knowledge to the highest bidder. Trust is earned slowly. Betrayal is remembered forever.
04 Station Horizon

You are the commander of UESSC Horizon, a newly commissioned frontier station at the edge of colonized space. The posting is not prestigious. The budget is thin. The crew is small. But the location was chosen for a reason.

Your mission: establish a self-sustaining outpost, build trade relationships with the factions, and explore the uncharted systems beyond the Jump Gates. Every decision made aboard Horizon will shape its future, from the modules constructed to the alliances formed and broken.

What is found out there will change everything. The Builders left more than Gates. And the Resonance is not random. It is a signal.

05 Key Crew Dossiers
Mara Voss
Drift Union
Station Administrator / Drift Union Liaison
An idealist who believes in independence and fair governance. Lost her brother in a Gate incident that was never fully explained. Keeps the station running when everything else falls apart, and asks uncomfortable questions when things are too quiet.
Whisper
Independent
Data & Intelligence Officer
Real name unknown. Former information broker with a cybernetic augmentation that reacts to Builder technology in ways that should not be possible. Hears things others cannot. Trusts no one completely, but respects competence.
Dr. Meridian
Ex-Nexus Corp
Chief Medical Officer
Ex-Nexus Corp biotech researcher who defected after discovering what the Resonance does to living tissue. Brilliant, cautious, and haunted by what she knows. Her research may hold the key to understanding the Builders, if it does not destroy her first.
Sgt. Briggs
Calloway Industries
Security Chief / Military Liaison
Calloway Industries veteran with more combat deployments than he cares to remember. Believes the Resonance is a weapon and that the station needs to be ready for what comes through. Gruff exterior, genuine loyalty underneath.
Orin Tate
Independent
Operations Manager
Former docking master who knows every supply chain, every shortcut, and every contact worth knowing. The station's logistical backbone. Easygoing on the surface, but knows more than he lets on about the political currents flowing through the frontier.
SOLIS
Builder Origin
Builder Technology AI
A digital entity recovered from a Builder artifact. Not quite artificial intelligence, not quite alien consciousness. SOLIS interprets Builder data and slowly evolves with each new discovery. It may be the key to everything, or the reason everything falls apart.
